| Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
2008 FCA Camp at UCSB was a great success!
It was an amazing week at UCSB! With fires burning in the hills, smoke filled skies, ash blanketing the grounds, and power outages that at times lasted hours, the FCA sports camp persevered and in the end, God was glorified!
Over 600 young men and women showed up for an exciting week of sports and fellowship. The camp offered activities in football, baseball. softball, surfing for both boys and girls, basketball, and wrestling, as well as a variety of other sporting events. Participants were coached by qualified coaches assisted by a great group of huddle leaders. These huddle leaders are college/former college students who have a passion to serve the Lord by being positive role models for all these young people.
The camp staff was an amazing group of people to work and hang out with during camp. Every single person involved loves the Lord and loves these kids. You can see the passion in their eyes and feel their energy throughout every area of camp. That energy helped to make camp what it was.
As the first day of camp started, so did a brush fire in the hills of Goleta. By the next day, the fire had spread fast and was beginning to cause problems. By the time the Wednesday evening chapel was about to begin, the power went out. It remained out for the rest of the evening into the morning. As the staff gathered late into the night, it was determined that if the power did not come back on by 9:00 AM, camp would have to be cancelled.
When the morning did come, there was still no power. It was time to let the kids know that camp would have to be cancelled. As we gathered them at Campbell Hall, we were about ten minutes away from making the announcement when at 8:47 AM the power came back on. Camp would go on!
Throughout the week, there were more obstacles created by the fire but the staff kept things together. The kids adapted and God's mercy was poured out on the entire camp. By the end of the week, there were over 70 young people who gave their lives to Christ and another 150 who re-dedicated their lives.
The resolve of the dedicated staff and the spirit of all the campers are just two of the driving forces that kept camp rolling along. The biggest driving force was God himself. Through the darkness and the smoke, God gave us all an opportunity to shine. He allowed us to come together and show how mighty His word is when you do not lose your focus. Written in big letters on a board in the cafeteria was the following:
If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength! Proverbs 24:10 Camp Ministry
Camps are a time of "inspiration and perspiration" for athletes and coaches to reach their potential by offering comprehensive athletic, spiritual and leadership training.
